Ala Moana is actually a man made beach. In the 1920s Walter Dillingham was looking for a place to dispose of his dredged earth from the dredging of the Ala Wai canal. In 1931 the city of Honolulu began to clean up the area using funds from President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal. In 1934 President Roosevelt dedicated the park. In 1955 sand was brought from the Westside of Oahu to create the beach.
Ala Moana Shopping Center opened across the street from the Beach Park in 1959 with 87 stores filling 680,000 square feet on two levels. Today Ala Moana Center is more the 2 million square feet in size. The Ala Moana Center is home to all kinds of stores including Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Prada, Levis, Gap, Nordtroms as well as many others. The beach park itself is around 100 acres and has bathrooms, showers, concessions, and ample parking. It has calm waters due to an outside reef that breaks the waves up. This helped Ala Moana quickly grow to become a very popular beach park for tourists and locals alike. The tranquil waters create a perfect place for swimming and stand up paddle boarding, which Hawaii Beach Time rents and delivers here on a regular basis. The beach gets lots of sun and we recommend an umbrella and cooler to stay refreshed.
Ala Moana Beach Park is also home to one of the best surf spots on the south shore. Its called Ala Moana Bowls. It is an advanced wave and also the local surfers can be very territorial and it is not recommended for beginners. Overall, Ala Moana Beach Park is a great place for the whole family. Slightly less crowded than Waikiki and equally as convenient and beautiful, this beach is a must and Hawaii Beach Time is always ready to make your day even better.
