In Hawaiian, the name Makapu’u means “bulging eye” and was named such after an ancient legend of a god with eight bright eyes came from Tahiti and lived in a cave there at Makapu’u point. In 1888 an American ship had run aground here; so, subsequently in 1909 a beautiful lighthouse was built, situated high on the point and is still there. The hike up to the lighthouse is easy and worth checking out if you have the time. The beach itself is nestled between cliffs on one side and protruding lava rock on the other. It is very picturesque and worth a visit. There usually is a nice shore break and is great to play in the waves. Hawaii Beach Time regularly delivers boogie boards to this beach. At times the waves can get big and somewhat heavy, so be cautious and heed the warning signs. During the winter and early spring months this beach has a great vantage point to see Humpback Whales as they migrate.
